Joe Bentley has served as conductor of the Rochester Community Chorus since 1991. He is a Professor of Music and chairs the Department of Music, Theater, and Visual Art at Rochester College, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1986. Dr. Bentley holds the B.A. in Music Education from Harding University (1979), the M.M.E. from the University of Louisiana at Monroe (1984), and the D.M.A. in choral conducting from Michigan State University (2005). He has taught in Christian schools in Florida, Louisiana, and Tennessee, and has conducted a variety of choral ensembles including elementary, junior and senior high, college, graduate, and community choruses. He has also served as guest conductor and clinician for various local and regional choral festivals.
Dr. Bentley’s dissertation on the anthems of William Billings has been selected for submission by MSU to the American Choral Directors Association for consideration for the Julius Herford Prize in choral music research. In addition, he has performed professionally in opera, oratorio, concert, and recital. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and is an adjudicator and clinician for the Michigan School Vocal Music Association. Dr. Bentley was previously selected as “Faculty Member of the Year” at Rochester College, and has been included in Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda national honor society in music.
